Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship

Maintenance mechanics are the problem-solvers of the manufacturing world. They install, repair, and move heavy equipment and machinery to keep operations running smoothly. In this apprenticeship, you’ll get hands-on experience with everything from welding and pipefitting to carpentry and machining. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals and take classes at Â鶹ŮÀÉ to build your skills and confidence.

What does a Maintenance Mechanic do?

Maintenance mechanics keep buildings, machines, and equipment working safely and efficiently. You’ll learn to:

  • Install, align, and move machinery and heavy equipment
  • Read and follow blueprints or layout plans
  • Inspect and repair mechanical equipment
  • Keep building systems in good working condition
  • Troubleshoot and fix problems quickly

You’ll train in:

  • Pipefitting
  • Boiler making
  • Insulating
  • Welding
  • Machining
  • Carpentry
  • Structural repairs (floors, stairs, walls)

What are the qualifications?

To start your Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship, you’ll need:

  • A high school diploma or GED®
  • Physical ability to perform the job
  • To apply directly to a participating employer

Note: Entry requirements may vary depending on the employer.

How long is the program?

This is a 4-year apprenticeship that includes:

  • 7,424 hours of on-the-job training with an experienced mentor
  • 576 hours of paid related instruction at Â鶹ŮÀÉ
  • Additional classroom hours may be required depending on your training plan

How do I get started?

Step 1: Get Hired – Find a job with an employer who can support your hands-on training.
Step 2: Get Sponsored – Your employer will contact the DWD – Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards to set up your apprenticeship contract.

Once your contract is in place, you’ll be on your way to earning and learning on the job.

Online

Classes wherever you have an internet connection. 

  • An in-person career experience, such as an internship, practicum, or credit for prior learning, may be required.
  • Some online courses may be held at specific dates/times.
Day
Classes between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Evening
Classes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Weekend
A combination of online classes and Saturday and/or Sunday classes.
Full-time
12 or more credits per term.
Part-time
Fewer than 12 credits per term.
